Spendthrift gives the modern viewer a pretty good idea how Hollywood planned to “mold” the image of new star Henry Fonda. The Lanky One is cast as a profligate, polo-playing playboy, married to a beautiful but superficial heiress (Mary Brian). They divorce, and the wife gets all the money. But the humbled (and impoverished) Fonda finds true love in the arms of Pat Paterson, who cares nothing for material things.

Rick Morgan, an American involved in the bootlegging trade, is forced to relocate to Britain where he becomes one of the top cat burglars in London. On a cruise to Cuba, Lulu Smith falls in love with Bob Grover. Back home, she breaks off the romance when he tells her he is married. Lulu has a baby, but doesn’t tell Bob, who turns out to be a rising politician. She passes herself off as the baby’s nanny. When Bob learns what is going on, he adopts the little girl, not telling his wife or anyone else where she came from. Lulu gets a job at a newspaper. Things get complicated when the editor gets the dirt on Grover, but also wants to marry Lulu.
In this off-beat sci-fi film, an outspoken diplomat is murdered during an international trade conference. This is a terrible blow for his native country because the ambassador had come to stop his country from signing a treaty that would allow their enemy to exploit them. To prevent this from happening, a helpful scientist offers to temporarily revive the diplomat–the catch is that the ambassador can only remain resuscitated for six hours.
Martha Dawson, the daughter of an aircraft manufacturer building airplanes for the U.S. Army Air Corps, takes over the running of the plant when her father dies. She has problems with the test pilots that object working for a woman, especially with a disgraced pilot, Paul Redmond, trying to vindicate himself.
