Wanted

Hi all!

Here’s a list I made with movies that I’ve been trying to find for quite some time without any success, I’ve also included titles that have been requested to me by other people over the years.

Please, if you are a film collector, big or small, I ask you to take a good look at the list of films below, some of the films in this lists could be lost so we will probably never find those but most of them are not, if any of you guys have some of these titles and you would like to send them to me so I can upload them here on the site please send me an email to jon@rarefilmm.com with details of the films you have and the format (digital, DVD, VHS, etc). I know there’s a lot of people after some of these films so I really want to try to reduce this list as much as possible. The movies will be posted here with due credit given to the person that has sent me the film/s, credit can be just initials just first name, whatever you prefer, you can also opt to stay anonymous of course in any case please let me know how would you prefer that I mention you.

Thanks so much everyone, really appreciate the help.
Jon.

Hot Dogs for Gauguin is available in extremely truncated form from an episode of Saturday Night Live hosted by Jamie Lee Curtis in 1981. Like Langford Mills, you probably have to visit Martin Brest’s alma matter to view it

Might as well take LADIES OF THE MOB and CONVENTION CITY off the list. They’re lost films- there’s no print known to exist anywhere.

Are You There? is a film I’ve sought out for many years. It appears that a condensed 30 minute version circulates on occasion. I was recently able to locate someone who had about 15 minutes of that condensation. The footage is wonderful and left me wanting to see more. I would gladly send you what I have although of course it’s only about 25% of the entire film.

    Hi Jon,
Any luck finding “Chieko-sho” (Portrait of Chieko)? I have been looking for that film for several years. I don’t think it has ever been released on VHS or DVD anywhere in the world (including Japan). However, I am in touch with the University of California Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, which has the film on nine reels. The public can go there and watch the film for a $25 screening fee. I would like to do that later this year but an archivist told me the film is in poor condition and faded, and she will have to check with the film staff to see if “Chieko-sho” is viewable. Hope so!

I too have looking for this film. How could a film nominated for the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film for 1967 not me available? It had to be shown in theaters to qualify and to be voted for. If this film is that rare, Pacific Film Archive or UCLA should do a restoration. I have attempted to contact Shochiku Films of America (1968) (USA) (theatrical) (subtitled) with no response. I wonder if Criterion Films would be interested in a restoration?

Well, I watched the film in early December at UC Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, The Archive digitized it and I watched it on a monitor in a private screening room. Great film, loved it!

Some of these are famously “wanted” on lists of everyone everywhere (Jake’s Journey, Mice and men, 1970 Cleopatra). However “I Lysistrati ap’ to Thiseio (1986) [GREECE]” I managed to find. No subtitles though!

I’ve been trying to track down the debut feature of author James Robert Baker (AKA James Dillinger), called “MOUSE KLUB KONFIDENTIAL’ from 1978. I can only find the same two-sentence synopsis of the film anywhere I look (and it sounds absolutely bonkers). Been trying to reach out to people involved with Baker (who is now passed on for several years) but having no luck. Would love to find some leads on this movie!

      Hello!
Wow, never heard of that one, you’re right, it sounds absolutely crazy.
Did you try emailing Michael Medved? http://www.michaelmedved.com/
Baker’s Wikipedia article says: “It is also credited with having caused Michael Medved to abandon his dream of film making and instead become a film critic.” He may not have a copy but maybe he knows who could have one, long shot but I guess it never hurts to ask.
Sorry I can’t be of much help.

      Best,
      Jon.

Yo Jon! So glad your back!

So I thought I bring up something interesting… I just realized the IMDB page for Portrait of Chieko / Chieko-sho has been updated to include what seems to be a DVD cover of the film.

    https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0061471/mediaviewer/rm4259589376/

Is this legit? Even if its a bootleg cover that could mean it’s floating around for sale, most likely by some dodgy seller.. Anyone know where this image originates from? Could be a good lead.

For those who don’t know Portrait of Chieko is by far the rarest of all the films nominated for the best international/foreign language feature Oscar Award.

I have tracked down the origin of that image, it is from a blog where the author creates original mockups of DVD labels. The author in fact mentions that the film has not seen any home releases.

I have been looking around on Japanese websites for a couple of days and have found no leads towards available copies of the film. The closest I have come is a VHS of the 1957 film of the same name with Setsuko Hara.

I contacted the company in Japan that produced Portrait of Chieko and they told me that they have no plans to release the film digitally or on dvd/blu-ray. I talked to somebody on a movie site who said that they saw the film a couple of years ago via somebody posting it or posting a link to the film on their private blog. Maybe somebody has a copy other than the one in Berkley.

‘La Longue Marche’ (1966) seems unavailable in any format anywhere despite having someone as major as Jean-Louis Trintignant in the cast (and Robert Hossein and Maurice Ronet are hardly unknowns!). Director Alexandre Astruc’s other films all seem available.. The 1960 Renate Muller biopic ‘Liebling der Gotter’ (1960) is another one I’d love to find somewhere.

The number of films with available prints but no English subtitles is too huge to list. Andre Cayatte’s ‘Verdict’ with Gabin and Loren is one example.

THE SQUARE DEAL MAN (1917) definitely exists. I saw it at Cinevent in Columbus, Ohio three or four years ago. I’m not sure if a digital or home video version exists, however. I saw it on 16mm. Contact the people who run Cinevent (Michael Haynes) or The Columbus Moving Picture Show (Samantha Glasser) and they may be able to point you in the direction of someone who has it.

Btw, I just watched THE HAIRY APE (1944) after searching for it for 2 months, incredible movie (I haven’t read or seen the original Eugene O’Neill play,) – print I found was a bit crackly, well-worn, but still very watchable.

Hello. I read your list and the only one (I think) I have is “¡Olé…Cuba!”. However it is not a very good copy. It was kept by the Cinemateca de Cuba, and while I worked at the EICTV (the film school created by Gabriel García Márquez) we had a copy made for the mediatheque. Nobody seems to know if the producers left Cuba and took the negatives with them, but I have no knowledge of a better copy. It contains the whole story and the musical numbers (including a very young Celia Cruz singing “Pinar del Río” with the Sonora Matancera band), but frames and brief fragments are missing.

Joyu is on YouTube now. However, the only subs are Japanese, and both YT auto-translate and DeepL translate of the extracted Japanese subs give very uneven results in English. Not sure the film is worth watching until proper English subs are available. I’m trying to tidy them up, but it will take time and some sections are a real mess.
