Deceptively simple and executed with a documentary feel, this drama represents a highly personal journey home for expatriate Palestinian filmmaker Elia Suleiman. The film is divided into two sections. The first documents the paradoxical but sleepy existence in the Arab part of Nazareth. The second part takes a more political view of the city and in it, Suleiman takes a more active role. He has come to his former home in search of inspiration, but what he sees are many disturbing images of Arab people trapped in a cultural identity crisis, a point best illustrated by the plight of a young Arab woman who wants more independence than traditionally allowed in her part of town but cannot find it because of prejudiced residents on the Jewish side.

So poignant. The overlay of European Jewish culture, and the totally different underlay of the indigenous population.,– Muslim and Christian. Since this time, even what was physically standing in Palestinian enclaves has been reduced to rubble.
Imagine giving a marker to “Mamilla,” home of King David. Why should this be fished out of Jewish history and crushed down upon the real homes of the people living now, not 3,000 years ago. Even the “Hebrew” is artificial — coked up in the Twenties in Germany, and with basically having an Indo-European language structure not a Semitic one.
Solzhenitsyn noted that the Russian Revolution was a revolution by Jews against the
Russian people — a pogrom vaster than any ever perpetrated in Tsarist times as Sozhenitsyn observed: the greatest persecution of Christians since thos of the Roman Caesars. This seems to be more of the same. What kind of tribal morality seems to
dictate that it iis alright to do unto others what you don’t want done on yourselves?
