Hi all!

Here’s a list I made with movies that I’ve been trying to find for quite some time without any success, I’ve also included titles that have been requested to me by other people over the years.

Please, if you are a film collector, big or small, I ask you to take a good look at the list of films below, some of the films in this lists could be lost so we will probably never find those but most of them are not, if any of you guys have some of these titles and you would like to send them to me so I can upload them here on the site please send me an email to jon@rarefilmm.com with details of the films you have and the format (digital, DVD, VHS, etc). I know there’s a lot of people after some of these films so I really want to try to reduce this list as much as possible. The movies will be posted here with due credit given to the person that has sent me the film/s, credit can be just initials just first name, whatever you prefer, you can also opt to stay anonymous of course in any case please let me know how would you prefer that I mention you.

Thanks so much everyone, really appreciate the help.

Are You There? is a film I’ve sought out for many years. It appears that a condensed 30 minute version circulates on occasion. I was recently able to locate someone who had about 15 minutes of that condensation. The footage is wonderful and left me wanting to see more. I would gladly send you what I have although of course it’s only about 25% of the entire film.

Some of these are famously “wanted” on lists of everyone everywhere (Jake’s Journey, Mice and men, 1970 Cleopatra). However “I Lysistrati ap’ to Thiseio (1986) [GREECE]” I managed to find. No subtitles though!

    Hi Jon,
You want The Mozart story 1948 by Hartl in English but in fact the original German version from 1942 Wen die Götter lieben is available with English hard subs on archive org https://archive.org/details/Mozart2
I suppose you want the German version of Julia, du bist zauberhaft 1962 but I have the English version of this film with Charles Boyer and Lili Palmer

I’ve been trying to track down the debut feature of author James Robert Baker (AKA James Dillinger), called “MOUSE KLUB KONFIDENTIAL’ from 1978. I can only find the same two-sentence synopsis of the film anywhere I look (and it sounds absolutely bonkers). Been trying to reach out to people involved with Baker (who is now passed on for several years) but having no luck. Would love to find some leads on this movie!

    • Jon W.
      July 8, 2019

Wow, never heard of that one, you’re right, it sounds absolutely crazy.
Did you try emailing Michael Medved? http://www.michaelmedved.com/
Baker’s Wikipedia article says: “It is also credited with having caused Michael Medved to abandon his dream of film making and instead become a film critic.” He may not have a copy but maybe he knows who could have one, long shot but I guess it never hurts to ask.
Sorry I can’t be of much help.

Hi, I have been looking for And no one could save her and The man who came to dinner ( 1972) which are listed here as well as, The Farmer’s daughter (1963) tvmovie not series, The Ambassadors (1977) and Summer and Smoke (1972) which is currently listed as lost. Does anyone has has any of these? I have recently aquired a mediocre copy of The Hunted ( Touch me not ) ( 1974). All the above star Lee Remick.

Yo Jon! So glad your back!

So I thought I bring up something interesting… I just realized the IMDB page for Portrait of Chieko / Chieko-sho has been updated to include what seems to be a DVD cover of the film.

Is this legit? Even if its a bootleg cover that could mean it’s floating around for sale, most likely by some dodgy seller.. Anyone know where this image originates from? Could be a good lead.

For those who don’t know Portrait of Chieko is by far the rarest of all the films nominated for the best international/foreign language feature Oscar Award.

    • Nathaniel
      January 5, 2021

I have tracked down the origin of that image, it is from a blog where the author creates original mockups of DVD labels. The author in fact mentions that the film has not seen any home releases.
I have been looking around on Japanese websites for a couple of days and have found no leads towards available copies of the film. The closest I have come is a VHS of the 1957 film of the same name with Setsuko Hara.

      • Kurt
        July 30, 2021

I contacted the company in Japan that produced Portrait of Chieko and they told me that they have no plans to release the film digitally or on dvd/blu-ray. I talked to somebody on a movie site who said that they saw the film a couple of years ago via somebody posting it or posting a link to the film on their private blog. Maybe somebody has a copy other than the one in Berkley.

‘La Longue Marche’ (1966) seems unavailable in any format anywhere despite having someone as major as Jean-Louis Trintignant in the cast (and Robert Hossein and Maurice Ronet are hardly unknowns!). Director Alexandre Astruc’s other films all seem available.. The 1960 Renate Muller biopic ‘Liebling der Gotter’ (1960) is another one I’d love to find somewhere.

The number of films with available prints but no English subtitles is too huge to list. Andre Cayatte’s ‘Verdict’ with Gabin and Loren is one example.

SILKS AND SADDLES (1929) has a Grapevine Video release.

  15. January 4, 2021

THE SQUARE DEAL MAN (1917) definitely exists. I saw it at Cinevent in Columbus, Ohio three or four years ago. I’m not sure if a digital or home video version exists, however. I saw it on 16mm. Contact the people who run Cinevent (Michael Haynes) or The Columbus Moving Picture Show (Samantha Glasser) and they may be able to point you in the direction of someone who has it.

Hello Jon, no worries, will keep an eye out for that remake of HATFUL,

Btw, I just watched THE HAIRY APE (1944) after searching for it for 2 months, incredible movie (I haven’t read or seen the original Eugene O’Neill play,) – print I found was a bit crackly, well-worn, but still very watchable.

A worthy addition to your collection?

Why was “Her Wild Oat (1927)” crossed out. Do you have a copy? Because even though it’s been found since 2007 and restored and had a screening in 2014 it’s never had a home release as far as I know.

Wow that’s great news, I had no idea, I see it comes with an English audio track as well, right? I’m only interested in the TV movie/special, is there any chance you could upload the files somewhere and email them to me? My email is jon@rarefilmm.com I think it’d be a nice little film to share with everyone here especially now close to Christmas time. Let me know, if you need help with the copying/ripping process please email me and I’ll try to guide you a bit.

I’m looking for ANGELS OF DARKNESS / Donne Proibite a 1954 Italian movie directed by Guiseppe Amata starrring Linda Darnell.
    Thanking you!

  24. January 19, 2022

Hello. I read your list and the only one (I think) I have is “¡Olé…Cuba!”. However it is not a very good copy. It was kept by the Cinemateca de Cuba, and while I worked at the EICTV (the film school created by Gabriel García Márquez) we had a copy made for the mediatheque. Nobody seems to know if the producers left Cuba and took the negatives with them, but I have no knowledge of a better copy. It contains the whole story and the musical numbers (including a very young Celia Cruz singing “Pinar del Río” with the Sonora Matancera band), but frames and brief fragments are missing.

Joyu is on YouTube now. However, the only subs are Japanese, and both YT auto-translate and DeepL translate of the extracted Japanese subs give very uneven results in English. My interest is Academy Award nominated non-English language films and I’d like to see two such films on your service. The first is Luis Alcoriza’s 1962 Mexican comedy Tlayucan. The second is Jerzy Kawalerowicz’s 1966 epic Faraon/Pharoah. Both of these films are available on YouTube, but neither of them have English subtitles. For those of us who don’t speak these languages, watching these films is a little difficult.

On June 27th, I mentioned that Luis Alcariza’s Tlayacan and Jerzy Kawalerowicz’s Faraon/Pharoah were unavailable in the US with English subtitles. I just recently discovered that Carlos Saura’s 1979 Mamá Cumple Cien Años/Mama Turns 100 is also not available with English subtitles. The film is available on Youtube, but it doesn’t have English subtitles and my Spanish isn’t good enough to listen to the film without subtitles. I’m a huge fan of grindhouse/exploitation films, and here are my Holy Grails:

    1. Mondo Trasho by John Waters. This film is not completely lost; Waters has a copy. However, he has stated that a release of it is impossible, because the music in the film were just records he took from his record collection without actually getting the rights to the songs, which included tracks by Elvis Presley, Little Richard, the Shangri-Las, and others. The music clearance for the film would cost a ridiculous amount of money, and Waters has said it is too cost prohibitive.

    2. Him. This came out in 1973; it’s a gay porno film based on the life of Jesus. It hasn’t been seen since the 1970s.

    3. The Newcomers (aka Seven Delicious Wishes), directed by Lloyd Kaufman under the pseudonym Louis Su. This is a hardcore film with Harry Reems, Georgina Spelvin, Tina Russell, and others – and it was a musical. I’m friendly with Lloyd and have asked him if he knows where to find it. He does not know; he told me he does not have a copy of the film, and thinks it could be lost.

I am searching for That Man From Tehran (AKA Valley of Death AKA وادي الموت AKA آن مردی از تهران), a co-production between Iran and Lebanon that was released in 1966 or 1967. I have found versions of it on YouTube but it’s dubbed in Persian and I need it in its original English version. Can anyone help me find this?

I’m looking for Keeper of the Bees (1947), directed by John Sturges. the videos on YouTube claiming to be this film are the 1935 version.

I’m also looking for Run For Your Life (1988), directed by Terence Young. I think this film has been released under different titles, it stars David Carradine, Lauren Hutton, and George Segal. It seems to only exist on Australian VHS. I don’t have the gear required to play an Australian VHS. I’d appreciate any help sourcing either of these films.

You`re welcome. VK and OK have a bunch of load less know movies so it`s really worthy to check it.

It`s on e-Bay and pretty cheap. Has also DVD Region 0 and English subtitles. I haven`t found a decent file anywhere.

Is anyone able to find The Stranglers (1906)? It’s a Brazilian movie. I wasn’t able to find it anywhere.

Hello. I did some research and the movie you`re looking for seems to be totally obscure. Beside that you did a typo-it`s from 1908 not 1906. The original title is Os Estranguladores if I typed it correcly. No rates on any database film site. The feature was shown at Silent Film Festival in San Francisco in 2005 with music played live but it`s only one substantial information I was able to find.

This is probably a profoundly ignorant question on my part, but what do HP and MP stand for in the first list of titles?

      May 16, 2024

Oh that’s something for me since I want to do a big reorganizing of this page and split it into 3 categories
HP = High Priority | MP = Medium Priority.
There’s also “HG” for “Holy Grail”.

Hello! I’ve been looking for a couple of movies everywhere (vk, ok.ru etc.) but can’t seem to find them! If you can give me a hand I’d appreciate it so much. Films are:
    – “Come, quando, perché” aka “How, When, and with Whom” by Antonio Pietrangeli (1969)
    – “Bedre enn sitt rykte” aka “Better than their reputation” by Edith Carlmar (1955)

hi! thanks jon (and piotr, too!) for helping out with this list of obscure gems. i was wondering if you have news about these two hard to find/potentially lost movies: “90 Nights Around the World” (90 notti in giro per il mondo) by Mino Loy, 1963 + “Tricia’s Wedding” by Milton Miron, 1971. have a nice day!

Hello, what a nice word from you! I did some research and 90 Nigths Around the World and Tricia`s Wedding seem to be pretty obscure. I was able to find only some teasers on YT. However, you can ask for help on the chat-there is a bigger chance that somebody will find the answer. Have a nice day, too!

Hello! There’s a movie I can’t get my hands on. “Corky” (1972), starring Robert Blake. I was wondering if anyone on here would have luck finding it. I’ve had none so far, and that movie seems right up my alley. Thanks in advance!

Hello! thank you guys for keeping alive this space :> I looked everywhere for two (apparently) lost films and I while they aren’t greatly reviewed, I still wished to give them a watch. Any news about “Féminin-féminin” by Henri Calef and João Correa (1973) and “Il vento e le rose” by Elisa Bolognini (2009)? The latter seems to be vanished from Earth…
