La femme défendue (1997) AKA The Forbidden Woman

(21)

A middle-aged engineer becomes infatuated with Muriel, a young woman he meets by chance, and begins secretly filming their encounters with a hidden camera. As he drifts into an obsessive, idealized passion, the line between desire and delusion blurs. Told entirely through his voyeuristic point of view, the film charts the emotional unraveling of a man consumed by a love he cannot openly pursue—an intimate, unsettling study of longing, obsession, and self-deception.

Director: Philippe Harel. AKA The Forbidden Woman
Writers: Eric Assous, Philippe Harel.
Stars: Isabelle Carré, Philippe Harel, Nathalie Conio, Sophie Niedergang, Julien Niedergang.

1997 Cannes Film Festival – Nominated for the Palme d’Or.

Interesting, not entirely satisfying. It’s a movie that takes a lot of risks, not just with the subjective camerawork (entirely from the guy’s POV) but also with a double-idiot plot. He’s thinking with his penis, like all men, and she’s a tedious fool, although her foolishness is redeemed by being a typical beautiful blond French bombshell. Otherwise, the director borrows from Godard, Bresson, Truffaut, Rohmer, the whole pantheon, in fact. Movies like this can be gauged by the viewer imagining how successful the exact same film would be with an ordinary-looking girl in the role of the blond French bombshell.

Charming actress, and she has good acting moments. The man’s voice and tone are not fitting to my ears (he sounds old and feeble).
