Jean-Claude Lauzon’s highly praised film tells the strange story of Léolo, a young boy from Montréal. Told from Léolo’s point-of-view, the film depicts his family of lunatics and Léolo’s attempts to deal with them. Not one individual in the boy’s life is well adjusted. His brother, after being beaten up, spends the film bulking up on growth protein. The grandfather hires half-naked girls to bite off his toenails and, in a brutal rage, almost kills Léolo. As he witnesses his family decay around him, Léolo retreats into himself and the fantasy world he has constructed. In response to the weirdness of his daily life, Léolo creates a little mental mayhem of his own which Lauzon renders in an amazing series of free-form, surreal images.

Many thanks to the very kind Peter for sending me a copy of the rare English dubbed verison of this film.
One of the greatest z Canadian films ever. Insane that the 4K restoration has not been commercially released yet
The musical background was rather nice. Some of the photography was nice. BUT the story was POOR, POOR, POOR! To think people used a lot of photographic expertise to put out such a poor film is rather amazing.
Possibly the darkest “coming of age” story ever made. Leolo is special watch.
Forgive my ignorance, but I had read that the English dubbed version is in the uncut version. What about the others that are in V.O.? I see that the duration is the same and they have more quality. If someone could clarify it to me.
Thank you.
Greetings.
Hi Juan,
I haven’t seen the film but at first glance both seem uncut to me, you can compare them side by side to see and see if you notice any differences.
Film was originally recorded in 4:3 (1.33 aspect ratio). This version has an aspect ratio of 1.85 aproximately. And there are some other versions which have an aspect ratio of 1.66 out there also. I’m comparing the frames and it seems there is some cutting at the top and bottom of the frame.
I’ll leave this here in case it is useful:
