A girl who moves to the city after her fiancé lacks the courage to face his father, who is against their relationship. In the city the girl winds up being abused by men, giving birth to a child and supporting herself on prostitution.

Hugh Mitchell is campaigning for Mayor of Lawtonville against the incumbent, Fulderwilder, but his having trouble with his son, Danny, who persists in telling lies. Trouble starts brewing when Danny, who is “assisting” the town’s new doctor, Antonia Cordell, slips his father’s campaign handbills into the envelopes containing the doctor’s announcement cards. Mayor Fulderwilder accuses Mitchell of complicity in the affair.
A young girl from the ghetto gets involved with some criminals. Driving while drunk, she knocks down and kills a policeman. She runs away with two GI’s who are also on the run and they start a crime wave.
