Joan Summers enters the office of jewel merchant Montclaire closely followed by Kendal Wolf. Each recognizes the other to be a jewel thief, and wordlessly they team together to steal a $30,000 diamond. Searched and questioned when the gem is missed, they are released….with the gem. Detective Sharpe is still suspicious and so is the head of Jeweler’s Indemnity, who puts two underworld men on to retrieve the diamond.

Two common working-class people, Robert and Jenny, meet one day in a bar. After Robert defends Jenny against her date, a district attorney’s chauffeur, who is trying to get her drunk, they begin a relationship. She soon discovers that she will be tried in court for an abortion she needed a few years previously. Her parents disown her and she loses her job as a saleswoman. Robert stays with her, admitting his own responsibility for killing someone when he was 17 years old. Distraught at the thought of going to prison, Jenny convinces Robert to commit suicide with her. Just as she is planning the suicide, her lawyer comes and announces that the case has been dropped.
The story takes place in a seedy circus, where malevolent clown Smiley plots to further the career of aspiring lion tamer Kit Warren. Knocking off Kit’s main competition Lola Tremain, Smiley pulls strings to have Kit teamed with Lola’s former partner Blaney Lewis. When Blaney himself falls in love with Kit, the outraged Smiley retaliates by setting fire to the circus.
