Odile and Camille are two sisters living in Paris. Odile is frustrated in her dull marriage to Claude, who shows no enthusiasm in her desire to buy a new apartment. Camille, studying for a doctorate, suffers from a panic disorder. The lives of both women are up-ended when three men enter their lives.
The story deals with a young girl getting adopted by a family that holds her like a slave and then being “freed” by a young man working for this family’s company. 10 years later she gets involved in the murder of one of her step-sisters.
Two masters of chess duel each other not only in their game but also in their different ideologies. The veteran Akiva is a Soviet Jew and ferocious Communist, master of his game but also dealing with a declining health while the young and restless genius Pavius has defected to the West to escape from the Communism tentacles. Their differences will be put to test while they’re both competing in the World Chess Championship, with a huge prize at stake just as much as the political ideologies behind those characters.
Hazel runs a beauty salon out of her house, but makes extra money by providing ruthless women to do hit jobs. K.T. is a parasite, and contacts Hazel looking for work when he runs out of money. She is reluctant to use him for a hit, since she prefers using women, but decides to try him on a trial basis. Meanwhile, the local cop she pays off wants an arrest to make it look like he’s actually doing his job, but she doesn’t want to sacrifice any of her “associates.” Several other side plots are woven in, populated with characters from the sleazy side of life.
