When young Tako’s father dies in Hungary in 1945, Tako is left with scant memories of him. Nurtured by his mother, the boy nonetheless fantasizes about the man his father was, imagining him to have been a hero. Grown into a man himself, Tako falls for a Jewish refugee, Anni. Burdened by her own heritage as a Jew, Anni sparks in Tako a desire to find out what his father was really like, and he delves into the role his father played in World War II.

When man-about-town Saheiji finds himself unable to pay for a bill at a brothel, he is forced to remain there to work off his debt. However he finds his wit and resourcefulness enable him to turn this situation to his advantage, as he interacts with a whole range of characters, from rivalling courtesans to political activists.

Most of the action takes place in a modest apartment, in a gray, shabby tenement house. He will take care of her – he will feed her and make sure that she does not run away. Children spend long hours alone. They are waiting for someone to come, perhaps for their parents’ return, or on the contrary – they would like to leave the apartment. Outside the window you can hear free-flying pigeons. The boy and his little sister look longingly at the door. Time seems to pass so slowly…

A dream-like story of a sleeping man whose body parts live their own lives at night to return to him in the morning – all except one leg which has chosen freedom. Its owner as well as a crowd of homeless men chase the leg, but it grows feathers and flies away as a bird. A grotesque tale with a poetic ending and with interesting music by Janusz Hajdun.

In the age of the Bulgarian National Revival an icon painter is invited to do frescoes and to decorate the icon stand in a newly built orthodox church in a small Bulgarian town. He inspires love feelings in a young girl – Katerina, who opposes the common moral understandings in Bulgarian society.
