Zoltán Huszárik paints a lyrical portrait of the Hungarian-born sculptor Amerigo Tot, who achieved world fame in Italy. The associative short film focuses on the inspirations of creation, the relationship between man and his creative work, which are fed by the experiences of everyday life and the materiality of objects. The series of milestone works in his career are counterpointed by the episode when the artist returned to Hungary. Here, too, Huszárik worked together with János Tóth, who as cinematographer and editor contributed to the unique ambience of this portrait film, the audio-collage accompanying the images is the work of Péter Eötvös.

De grands événements et des gens ordinaires (1979) AKA Of Great Events and Ordinary People

In 1978, Ruiz was commissioned to make a television documentary about the French elections from the viewpoint of a Chilean exile in the 11th arrondissement. But, contrary to the producers’ expectation, the Left lost. Ruiz seized on this anti-climax to make a documentary about nothing except itself – a film whose central subject is forever lost in digression and ‘dispersal’, harking back to his Chilean experiments of the ’60s. It is the best, and certainly the funniest, of self-reflexive deconstructions of the documentary form. Ruiz drolly exaggerates every hare-brained convention of TV reportage, from shot/reverse shot ‘suture’ and talking-head experts to establishing shots and vox pops (narrator’s note to himself: “Include street interviews ad absurdum”.)

An incestuous portrait of the Notre Dame de Paris cathedral that reveals the feminine nature of this monument. Notre-Dame Cathedral is the support of an ecstatic vision: the convulsions of the camera and the frenzy of the editing, accompanied by loops of liturgical and noisy music, dematerialize the monument, transforming it into flashes of colour, lines and fleeting forms.

Dusan Makavejev’s Early Shorts (1955-1964)

During the ’50s Makavejev began making short films and documentaries in the Zagreb and Belgrade studios, as in Kino Klub Beograd, the center of avant-garde film and amateur activities during the ’60s in Serbia. The experimental and documentary impulse remains powerful in Makavejev’s work, as does the tendency to intercut undigested segments from other films into longer works. At the same time, those early works would be the first of many run-ins with the censors that would plague his career and, arguably, keep him from being recognized as a major postwar film artist.

To Prosopo tis Medousas (1967) AKA The Face of Medusa / Vortex

A few days before Filippos leaves London for a holiday on Crete, a Greek island, he sees that his girlfriend is cheating with his brother. He does not tell them anything about it, but during the holidays Filippos’ brother disappears without a trace. Both Alexis, who is a homosexual and secretly in love with Filippos’ brother, and his girlfriend put pressure on Filippos to indicate what he knows about the disappearance. However, Filippos sees this as the start of a dangerous game.
