An American businessman who is mistaken by everybody for a super-secret British agent on the trail of smuggled diamonds. When supposedly his liaison at the British Embassy meets him at the Lisbon airport, the car intended for him is blown up. No matter how much he protests, all of which are accepted as cover for his actual mission, he is then transported into a world of scheming, dangerous, underworld characters.

Set at the beginning of the Civil War, Tap Roots is all about a county in Mississippi which chooses to secede from the state rather than enter the conflict. The county is protected from the Confederacy by an abolitionist and a Native American gentleman. The abolitionist’s daughter is courted by a powerful newspaper publisher when her fiance, a confederate officer, elopes with the girl’s sister. The daughter at first resists the publisher’s attentions, but turns to him for aid when her ex-fiance plans to capture the seceding county on behalf of the South.

Rookie policewoman Christine Miller volunteers to go undercover to avenge her father’s death. Posing as a drug dealer, Christine inveigles her way into a vicious narcotics ring. Inevitably, she is found out, and it’s up to police-lieutenant Mike Trent, who’s fallen in love with Christine, to come to her rescue.
