This documentary reflects on some of the most ground-breaking directors in the history of American film, beginning with early cinematic trailblazers like Austrian immigrant Erich von Stroheim and Texas native King Vidor. Its examination of U.S. cinema’s lesser known history includes discussions of the careers of Samuel Fuller, Orson Welles and visionary outsider John Cassavetes, with commentary by “film school generation” masters Martin Scorsese, Paul Schrader and Peter Bogdanovich.
