A great Bresson film with characteristic odd moments. Jonathan Rosenbaum’s ‘Two Nights of an Extra: Working with Bresson’ is a good read on his website if you enjoyed the film.

Thanks, Jon– it’s always a treat to see a Bresson film. I do prefer Visconti’s 1957 version (Le Notti Bianche) of the 1848 Dostoyevsky novella, for its warmth and romanticism and the charisma of its leads (Marcello Mastroianni and Maria Schell).
But this one by Bresson is interesting indeed.
Somehow the French night-time scenes kept reminding me of Jean-Jacques Beineix’s cult classic Diva (1981)….which would be another great add to your amazing collection!
