A strong, naturalistic anti-war film with great performances and a stirring ending. Thank you Jon Rarefillmm!

A very deep message. It was interesting how they compared much earlier times with their present situation. The bright spot of the film was when early explorers came upon that island. Wonderful nudity, and beautiful music in that segment of the movie. But back to the main point of the movie….war usually has many losers.

In a country with a war history as old as the national origins, this movie profoundly demonstrates that history does repeat itself and that war only benefits the warlords, leaving behind a trail of death, misery and opression.

It’s profoundly allegoric to Portuguese folklore, myths and nationalist propaganda, with characters using common phrases and propaganda ideals.

Beautiful, beautiful. Not for the faint of heart —- as they advance along the road, you have a premonition of something bad going to happen — so it is starker than just listening to stories from history.. I wonder if solders talk so profoundly in the many struggles going on today. It was inspiring to see their respect for each other, not bragging and drinking as you would see in most movies with soldiersl
Such former colonies are now free, but horrific fighting has sprung up in the midst of the new leaders. It seems that the global arms industry that fattens itself which both sides fight is one of the factors. this industry thrives in America and in the EU. The Soviet Union (morphed into Putin’s Russia, China and Norh Korea go ballistic building weapons, while their ofn people struggle to survive. They want to keep them loyal by the need for “defending the nations.” This is another factor.
