In a film based on Neil Simon’s hit play, Walter Matthau portrays three unconnected roles. Sam Nash reluctantly joins his wife, Karen, in the suite where they spent their honeymoon, hoping to revive their flagging marriage. Then Jesse Kiplinger, an aging movie producer, is determined to seduce his old flame, Muriel. Finally, Matthau is beleaguered father Roy Hubley who, with his wife, Norma, struggles to get their daughter to her own wedding.

On the same day that he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for extraordinary valor in the European campaign during World War II, Sergeant Joe Dusak is charged with desertion during combat by a military court. Also summoned to testify are Corporal Crocker, Corporal Quinn and Private Pope, the only surviving members of a patrol led by Dusak. The charges stem from a patrol into the Black Forest of Germany in which Dusak claims the patrol got lost. Sergeant William Hutchins testifies that he ran into Dusak’s patrol, and the men were laughing and not lost.
American-born athlete Victor Herman becomes a prisoner of Soviet Russia’s mounting nationalism. At 16, he moves to Russia, where he excels in parachute jumping. As his accomplishments draw praise, Soviet officials ask that he renounce his American citizenship. When Herman refuses, he is exiled to Siberia and imprisoned in a hard-labor camp for 18 years because of his so-called “counterrevolutionary activities.” The film is based on a true story.
A reporter learns that his girlfriend’s father, an old sea captain, is being paid by the mob to transport gangsters out of the country.
As his partner in crime, Fred Dorella, heads to the bank and tries to extort cash from executive Ken Wilson, Johnny Cabot kidnaps Wilson’s wife, Nancy. Fred tells Ken that, unless he hands over $70,000 in cash, Johnny will kill Nancy. Ken comes up with a ploy to buy some time for the police to assess the situation. Though the scheme is coming unstuck, Fred and Johnny aren’t about to go quietly.
Famed Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro returns to Peru for one final mission — to conquer the Inca Empire, convert its people to Christianity and capture a supposedly massive cache of gold. Upon arriving in the Incan capital, Pizarro and his men secure the palace of the new Incan king, Atahualpa. As the assault on the natives continues, the typically ruthless leader and his doomed hostage begin to respect — and even admire — each other.
