Early in his naval career, Ken White is suddenly given command of his submarine, the USS Tiger Shark. To keep from being sunk, he orders a dive while the captain and another crewman are outside, and both are killed. White is promoted, but the events on the Tiger Shark continue to haunt him and also disrupt his marriage. Eventually, White takes a desk job. But when the Korean War flares up, White is called back to active duty and asked to lead the Tiger Shark once more.

Hazel runs a beauty salon out of her house, but makes extra money by providing ruthless women to do hit jobs. K.T. is a parasite, and contacts Hazel looking for work when he runs out of money. She is reluctant to use him for a hit, since she prefers using women, but decides to try him on a trial basis. Meanwhile, the local cop she pays off wants an arrest to make it look like he’s actually doing his job, but she doesn’t want to sacrifice any of her “associates.” Several other side plots are woven in, populated with characters from the sleazy side of life.

Burton is a brilliant, albeit self-seeking prosecution attorney who, having sent an innocent man, Wallace, to his death is filled with remorse and resigns and becomes a crusading defense attorney. He soon finds himself defending himself of a false murder charge.
A quirky, out-of-of place worker at a crucifix factory in the Bible Belt invents a device he claims can show pictures of Heaven. Discouraged and confused by the inability of those around him to see anything but a screenful of static, he charismatically hijacks a bus of friendly elderly people in order to get media attention for his invention.
