Very early in the morning, Marian, a 7-year-old boy from a small and isolated town in Romania, wakes up his father and convinces him to go to the city, to fix his old television. Despite the bad weather, the father finally agrees. Marian and her father begin the journey, carrying the television set, hoping that in the city they will find Bichescu, a specialist, who will fix their problem. A short road-movie about the father-son relationship and the importance of little things in life.

Brains, made in collaboration with an avant-garde theatre troupe by the name of Pupilija Ferkeverk, can be viewed as a recording of a carefully constructed performance, a spontaneous ritual or simply a bunch of longhaired, sea-hugging naturists tripping, as a passionate plea in favour of individuality and freedom and an angry cry against any kind of authority.

Different rites, different traditions and still he finds something in common. He recalls the people he knew, he feared or admired. He ponders over that life of no brilliance, where people plough, harvest, marry and die, celebrate or grieve. Miracle are also worked, conceived in a unlimited child’s imagination. It is the child’s perception of the world that helps us to give a meaning to the major questions of human existence.

In his fourth feature, Århus loyalist Nils Malmros continues his reminiscing fiction portryals of school days in the 1950s. You follow a class during its final years of grade school. The kids are teenagers, clannish, clownish, sweet and vicious, struggling to make sense of their physical and mental growing pains. The film was shot over two years: the cast literally grew up along with the action.
