Instead of playing a role in rebuilding her country, Haneke’s heroine remains preoccupied with her personal affairs. Shot predominantly in black and white (with a color sequence added toward the end), Fraulein asserts Haneke’s place alongside the masters of the New German Cinema.

A rebellious 17 year old is increasingly getting into trouble, doing drugs, and hiding events from his parents. As things spiral further out of control, his parents turn to an organization called “Toughlove” for help. There they learn that it sometimes is necessary to turn your back on your child and allow him to accept the consequences of his actions.
Conductor Claude Eastman marries Daniella, a younger woman. When Claude goes on tour, his buddy Norman misunderstands his request to make sure Daniella stays faithful and hires private eye Jess Keller to tail her. Returning to New York City, Claude receives a report from Jess that Daniella has been spending a suspicious amount of time with violinist Maxmilian Stein and grows murderously jealous.
