Gene and Finny are two boys who are best friends living in 1943, at the height of World War II. The two boys attend the Devon School, which prepares them for military life that they will most likely be subjected to. The film begins with a narration by an older Gene, traveling back to Devon some years later. The thing he wishes most to see is the tree, which had a great effect on the boys’ lives.
Jean-Daniel Pollet provides an insight into life on the leper colony of Spinalonga, an island off Crete, through the eyes of Raimondakis, who tells the story of his life to the camera after having been excluded from his community to spend years of his life on the island with his fellow sufferers. Themes addressed include love, community, companionship and death and the importance of these values to all people whatever their state of health.
The legendary actress Sarah Bernhardt’s unconventional life and career are examined in this biopic. At an audition in 1860, the teenage Bernhardt proclaims herself the greatest actress of her time. Her career blossoms, as does her private life. But art and life don’t stay balanced, much to the frustration of her lovers. The eccentric Bernhardt eventually does marry another actor, but it’s her life on stage that ultimately gives her the most satisfaction.
