Montmartre, 1896: the Can-Can, the dance in which the women lift their skirts, is forbidden. Nevertheless, Simone has it performed every day in her nightclub. Her employees use their female charms to let the representatives of law enforcement look the other way – and even attend the shows. Then the young ambitious judge Philippe Forrestier decides to bring this to an end. Will Simone manage to twist him round her little finger too? Her boyfriend, Francois, certainly doesn’t like to watch her trying.

The film is about the stories of three young people, Marisa, Anna and Enzo, whose situations develop alongside but without any link. Marisa, a modest shop assistant in a haberdasher’s, aims to become a singer: she will soon reach for success, thanks to a contest for new voices. Anna runs away from home to escape the lovely tyranny of her mother, but the life of a modern and free woman is very different from what she had in mind. Enzo, a boy with a head full of dreams frustrated by the misery of the reality that surrounds him, will try to escape the dullness of his existence by setting up a criminal operation.

Buster Keaton portrays the janitor at a newspaper who accidentally intercepts a call from the editor, ordering him to do a story about safety practices at a massive construction site. He sneaks onto the construction site and finds a list of 16 safety rules posted on a wall. He takes the list and attempts to confront workers when he sees them acting in an unsafe manner, often causing more accidents than he prevents. Keaton is silent throughout the film as he recreates several routines from his youth.

CBS TV news special hosted by Harry Reasoner explores the way-out world of the Hippies and the Haight-Ashbury psychedelic 1960s LSD scene. Footage of LSDs users experiencing bummer trips. The Diggers, the Oracle and cool street and Golden Gate Park scenes with hippies tripping out. The Grateful Dead are interviewed and are shown performing “Dancin’ in the Streets” on a flatbed truck in Golden Gate Park.

Using the eternal triangle as the main theme, the film shows how six different countries might deal with the moment a husband returns home unexpectedly to find his wife with a lover, with the same three actors playing all the roles. The film also parodies the well known styles of the prominent directors and stars of each country at the time the film was made.
