Sorry for the delay.
Wow, I actually auditioned for this movie when I was living in Tokyo back in the 80’s. Of course I was not selected but good memories and lots of my school mates in this movie.
I was not expecting this
It was like the goonies mixed with the never ending story
amazing and set in japan even better loved it
Fascinating… I only just learned of the manga recently, via the channel “Heirloom Horror” on YouTube.
If DEF had its ups and down (the story) with some of it paying off, and some of it not so much.
In particular, the part that kind of fucked up my psyche, was when Sho is operated on to remove his appendix. I have an unfortunate trait, where I try very hard to relate to the media I’m watching or reading.
What’s more… I’ve had my appendix removed after a bout of appendicitis as a young child. The only thing they didn’t get dead on, was the vomiting. Though… if I’m being honest, I much prefer it that way.. 😛 Realism isn’t always the best thing in stories of this nature. In any case, after watching the 3 part series covering the manga, I found myself very curious about a handful of different aspects of the story… Since, there are quite a few things that never really get explained. And, in my research, came across this. I’d had NO CLUE that it was adapted into a live action movie! I might have thought an episodic anime, or even just an OVA.. And (while I’ve only watched the first 3-4 minutes (so far), I’m already sensing that; a live action movie might have been a little…. too ambitious for a story like this.
Having said that, I’m committed to (by watching it) finding out! Thank you for providing such an old, and obscure, movie for us!!!
[Sorry to leave a second comment so soon after the first!]
However….. I had a somewhat.. “cultural” question, and felt the best place to pose it, was here,.. as, the likelihood of others having seen this movie feels pretty small outside of the forum/page/site where I found it.
My question is:
At 1:14 (right at the beginning) Sho runs into the kitchen, still soaked from the shower, and completely naked. At which point, he grabs (hugs?) his mother from behind, tries to kiss her neck, while grabbing at her breasts, and saying (in english) “Oh i love you I love you. Oh my (???) mommy!”. And, as he runs off, she asks “Where is your underwear?” which he answer with the question of; “Where is your bra?!”.
So.. my question is…
Wtf? Is that (or, more accurately, WAS that) considered normal/playful familial banter? There’s the obvious cultural disconnect for me, as I am American, and not Japanese. And, couple that with the time difference (as the movie is nearly 40 years old now!) and I feel as though I’m likely not the best person to determine how natural, or realistic, a scene like that actually IS, or ISN’T.
It should go without saying, that; a scene like that, today, would almost certainly raise some serious red flags, and leave anyone who saw it VERY confused..
But, again… I’m not really the best person to interpret how realistic, or “appropriate” a scene of that nature actually is (or, more accurately, WAS)
Can anyone give me any insight on the matter? 🙂
Please, and thank you!
