Three young people leave the psychiatric hospital to lead a “normal life” while working in the factory. They confide in their future prospects. In 1968, alarmed by the catastrophic state of public psychiatry in Italy, the communist municipality of Parma entrusted Mario Tommasini, a former gas worker, with the management of the mental health sector and its reorganization in a revolutionary fashion. This political initiative, inspired by Franco Basaglia, critic of the asylum institution and the origin of psychiatry outside the walls, marked the beginning of a vast undertaking of social integration of patients.

Originally titled “Nessuno o tutti” (“All or Nothing”) in reference to Brecht, this documentary is one of Marco Bellocchio’s most militant works, which has always been attentive to society’s prejudices about mental illness and their symbolic repercussions. Moving away from the canonical model of reporting, the film opens up to moments close to direct cinema. He follows the story of young offenders who broke up and left the reformatory to enter the asylum. Their testimonies, very strong, alternate with moments of collective denunciation, destined to proclaim that the ill-being and suffering of the protagonists are only the product of a corrupt and sick social structure. A collective film that is a manifesto in favor of Basaglia’s theses and in which the different sensibilities of intellectuals committed to this cause are put to good use.
