A woman who has spent years in concentration camps goes back to her native town (in her imagination) and tries to find members of her dead mother’s family.

After the success of his diploma work, My Heart in the Highlands (V gorakh moie serdtse, 1967), Khamdamov made a movie based on the poetics of Russian silent film, Accidental Joys (Nechaiannye radosti, 1972). The film was banned and partially destroyed. Nikita Mikhalkov recycled the story, the costumes, and the main actress Elena Solovei, for his popular Slave of Love (Raba liubvi, 1975). It took Khamdamov almost 20 years to recover from this and in 1991 he completed his project Anna Karamazoff, casting the icon of French intellectual cinema, Jeanne Moreau, as the female lead. By inserting the remains of Accidental Joys into this film, Khamdamov outraged the producers and Anna Karamazoff was never released.
