Told from the perspective of two children, The Small Town describes the relationship between members of an extended family in a small Turkish town. Told in four parts which unfold with the seasons, the film is a touching and bittersweet portrait of childhood and fears. Intimately observed and beautifully shot, Ceylan’s feature debut won the Caligari Prize at the 1998 Berlin Film Festival.

Note: Unfortunately due to the high amounts of grain present on the Bluray release of this film it is not possible to make it look watchable on streaming on the okru video player so I had to burn-in the subs using the older DVD release, while of course of much lower quality it looks MUCH better than the Bluray since it doesn’t get so insanely compressed. Both download options are encodes sourced from the Bluray and are of course much higher quality copies than the streaming version.
