It’s the oddest thing. I heard Marlene Dietrich sing in films like “Destry Rides Again”, and I thought that she couldn’t carry a tune in a bucket. Then I heard her sing in German and she was much more tuneful.

Wonderful German drama gets great performances from the three leads that includes a breathe-takingly beautiful young Marlene Dietrich. Interesting expressionistic camera & editing techniques by a young Kurt Bernhhardt which includes some power-house close-ups of the cast and a musical score that fills in the unspoken moments of incredible dramatic build. Thanks Jon.

Dietrich has an arresting screen presence in this film not simply beautiful but something more that adds to her star power. Fritz Kortner once again plays a man whose obsessive love leads him into self-destruction. This is a film worth seeing for the pairing of these two great stars of German cinema.
