I was expecting a conventional Maigret plot with twists and turns ending with a denouement where the killer is unmasked. This film had none of those plot elements although there are some revelations. What this film has is atmosphere and presence. It seems to have been mostly filmed at night. A chase is illuminated by the headlights of a pursuing car, a policeman walks down a road in a streaming rain among other striking scenes. The two Danes who are the central culprits are both very odd. This is a film worth seeing and it is another of the gems found in Jon’s cave of films for which we all owe a debt of thanks.

Thanks Jon for the chance to see this early Renoir film. According to some a reel was lost which would account for some of the difficulties in trying to follow the plot. Full of atmosphere as the previous post points out. The female in the lead role is really out there and was fantastic, gorgeous and very sexy. I was also impressed by her pet turtle! Now that was pretty original.
