While on assignment to document poverty in Brazil for Life magazine, African American photographer Gordon Parks encountered one of the most important subjects of his career: Flávio da Silva. Parks featured the resourceful, ailing boy, who lived with his family in one of Rio’s working-class neighborhoods known as favelas, in his 1961 photo essay “Freedom’s Fearful Foe: Poverty.” His reportage resulted in donations from Life readers but also sparked controversy.

On Aug. 19, 1991 in Crown Heights (Brooklyn, N.Y.) a Hasidic man accidentally runs over a Black boy (Gavin Cato). Three hours later a young Jewish scholar (Yankel Rosenbaum) was murdered by Black youths. Four days of fire-bombing and riots ensued. Anna Deavere-Smith acts out the roles of these 18 persons involved in the racial conflict, trying to present the differing views of this serious problem. Includes actual film footage of the riots and violence.

As a boy, Dominik watched an American crime boss murder his father, a police officer fighting corruption in Sofia, Bulgaria. Years later, he attempts to avenge his father’s death but is imprisoned for 15 years for attempted murder. In prison, he meets an American photo-journalist who shares his enemy and his thoughts of revenge. Released from prison, the two hatch a plot which involves the man’s recently-arrived daughter.

The speed of the procedure increases, until 24 photographs per second become visible, thus turning into a cinematic trajectory driving down the Pasadena freeway.

Two strangers knock on the door of Dr. Samuel Mudd. One has a broken leg. Mudd fixes it, and becomes an unwitting conspirator in the murder of Abraham Lincoln when his patient turns out to be a fleeing John Wilkes Booth. Railroaded by Lincoln’s secretary of war, Mudd is found guilty and sentenced to life in Fort Jefferson Prison. His wife, Frances, however, won’t rest until her husband’s wrongful conviction is overturned.

Mobster Ron Candell is set up by his underlings – principally Andy Damon – and is convicted of murder. He escapes but finds himself in a nuclear testing area. He survives the blast but his body begins to undergo change at the cellular level, making him a man of steel. He makes his way back to town seeking revenge on those who testified against him, including his ex-girlfriend Linda Marlow. As he continues to mutate however, he become ever more dangerous. Stopping him however is easier said than done.
