This black-and-white cartoon captures the last few moments of a prisoner arriving at the place of execution before the weapons roll. The darkness before death is preceded by the darkness of a blindfold that allows only two bands of light into the world. This is the last time the prisoner can see the nose of his shoes on the pavement.

Shindo’s “Hymn” is one of many adaptions of Tanizaki’s classical novella ‘Shunkinsho’ (‘A Portrait of Shunkin’, 1933). The story tells of the adoration of Sasuke for his mistress, the blind samisen-teacher Shunkin, who treats him imperiously and subjects him to cruel beatings. After an unknown intruder probably one of her pupils, who seeks revenge for her cruel behaviour, pours boiling water on the sleeping Shunkin’s face, Sasuke blinds himself in order not to behold her disfigurement. Sasuke’s sacrifice, made in response to Shunkin’s tacit wish, seals their life-long relationship.
Klaus Lemke′s first feature-length film depicts the odyssey of society drop-out Frank Murnau from Schliersee to Rome and Acapulco. Actually, he could have led an easy life. Monika, the daughter of a rich factory owner is in love with him, hesitating at first, Frank finally opts for jet set beauty Laura: by choosing her, he also chooses independence, which he otherwise fears to lose. He is looking for adventure, attempts to get rich by revealing industry secrets and tries to secure a place among the rich by emulating the style he learned from American gangster movies. But soon he′s in over his head, since he can not escape his own past.
