A young shepherd returns home after the Second World War having been held in a prisoner of war camp. He finds that the local landowner has stolen his sheep and his girlfriend. When he also assaults and murders his sister, the shepherd takes revenge.

The appearance of an unknown “missile-like” object in nearby space leads a European nation to fire a rocket at it. Though the rocket intercepts the unidentified object, the explosion only diverts the missile into an orbit around the Earth. Jim Deakins is a frontiersman and Indian trader who is making a perilous journey with a group of other men up the Missouri River to get a large haul of furs from friendly Blackfoot Indians. The problem is that they have to get through hostile Indian territory first and they find that they have seriously underestimated the difficulties they will undergo. The large body of men who started the journey are gradually whittled down until only a hardy few, like Deakins, are left.
Tormented and scared girl escapes from being hit at night on a barren road. The driver rescues and shelters her in a mansion belonging to his mistress. He discovers that she is running away from a psychotic husband, and due to the gracious assistance, falls madly in love with her. When the caretaker of the mansion discovers a ransom offered for who find the young woman, he tells her whereabouts to the husband, who ruthlessly pursues their victim.
