Life on the home front during World War 2. Martha Dacre tries to keep her home running as normal, during the run up to the D Day landings. With several lodgers to contend with, and her son and daughter away serving in the Navy, she has chosen to stay as a housewife. When her son’s ship is damaged during the landings, she begins to regret, not taking a war job.
The wife of an alcoholic writer must take a job as a taxi driver to make ends meet. A young man she picks up as a fare befriends her, but when her husband is found murdered, the police suspect she and her new “friend” committed the murder.
A railroad engineer adopts a French orphan while he’s fighting in the army in World War I, and takes him back to the US when the war ends. Later the boy needs an eye operation that the engineer can’t afford, so he takes the rap for a murder he didn’t commit in order to get his son the operation.
Shimamura, an artist, comes to this snowbound town to rejuvenate himself. He connects with Komako, a geisha he met on a previous trip, and it seems like love. She’s the foster daughter of a local family, almost engaged to the family’s son Yukio, now dying of consumption. He’s tended by his sister Yuko who’s angry at Komako for abandoning her brother. Shimamura returns to Tokyo but promises he will be back soon. In anticipation of his return, Komako breaks with her patron and her family loses their home. Complications arise when Shimamura doesn’t come back as promised.
A radio columnist is threatened by gangsters and later murdered during a broadcast. A detective sets out to find the killers.
When the showboat hits town, two men use the parade as a distraction to rob the bank. Their accomplice is Pop, the clown from the showboat. He leaves the money on the boat and tells his daughter Patsy to bring it to him at a later stop on the river. When Patsy arrives without the money, both her and her father are made prisoners. So she sends her trained dog back to the showboat for help.
