In desperation brought on by near-starvation, Helge Roos kills his master’s ox and feeds it to his wife and baby daughter. No-one suspects anything until the meat is finished and Helge tries to sell the hide at a local market. He is spotted by the local vicar and, wracked with guilt, confesses. The vicar assures him that if he gives himself up, he’ll be treated leniently, but Helge’s sentence is far harsher than anyone predicted…

Marshal Antonio Carotenuto is sent to Sagliena, an imaginary little village in the center of Italy in the ’50s, to assume his new mandate. In the village he knows Maria (Frisky) AKA ‘la Bersagliera’, secretly in love with a policeman (Carabiniere) reporting to Antonio. But also Paoletta, the priest’s nephew, loves him. Things become more complicated when Annarella, the midwife, starts demonstrating her love to Antonio. She is hiding a secret and the Marshal soon will be in a restless situation.
Electrician Bert Harris boasts that he’s a successful cat burglar, which leads to him getting mixed up with real thieves who need those special skills for a big jewellery heist. However, Bert was only giving them a “song and dance” about being a cat burglar, but now discovers it’s too late to back out.
Peter Gunn investigates the murder of Scarlotti, a mobster who once saved the detective’s life. The primary suspect appears to be Fusco, who has taken over. In the middle of the case, an unclothed woman calling her self Samantha shows up at Gunn’s apartment. The investigation gets grizzlier as it goes on, including the bombing of Mother’s, one of Gunn’s hangouts. Finally, Fusco gives Gunn a deadline to prove the mobster didn’t kill Scarlotti – or else Gunn will be killed.
