A rabbi is murdered. Detective Llonrot is called in on the case and looks for a ‘rabbinical explanation’ for the murder. Other murders are committed and deliberate clues left in chosen locations. Llonrot, convinced he is on the trail of a ‘mystical intrigue’ is lured to the ‘crime scene’ when the tables are turned by his nemesis, the master criminal Red Scharlach.
Based on the classic Jorge Luis Borges short story ‘Death and The Compass’, this was a graduation film made at the National Film School in 1975 by Paul Miller, who later went on to found Paul Miller Post Production in London. The film sat on a shelf until 2000 when Dave Bridges, the lighting cameraman, mentioned it to Alex Cox. Spiderweb was then included as an extra on the 2001 DVD release with Alex Cox’s version of the same story starring Peter Boyle.
