Tom Noonan’s dark comedy features a husband-and-wife team of psychotherapists who run a New-Age therapy group out in the wilderness. Late one night, Jack and Rita are visited by one of their patients, Cosmo, and his wife, Arlie. Cosmo’s wife has felt “left out,” since her husband spends so much time with the therapists and confides all of their secrets to them. Arlie has insisted on meeting them–the evening begins awkwardly, then painfully grinds on, as various tensions and power struggles emerge between and among the two couples.

Yes, RIP Tom Noonan indeed, appreciations of whom have been somewhat lost it seems, in the media shuffle of those obits for Robert Duvall, Fred Wiseman, Catherine O’Hara & Bud Cort … Although Noonan may be most remembered generally for his brilliant acting portrayals in films such as Manhunter … But to my mind his greatest accomplishment was as a director, particularly for “What Happened Was”, which really blew me away when I saw it … And this one’s also good!

Incidentally, after so many cinephiles being so up in arms over the new Okru players not leaving the counter-clock visible even when you hover on it … And then so relieved that they made it hover again for films which are in playlists if you hover on the upper-left playlist button … Now suddenly THAT has been changed for the worst again mysteriously — so that it no longer stays on-screen even that way …. And there’s no way to consistently see where you’re at in your film (unless you actually click to open the fly-wheel which then takes up a big bump in the screen) … Annoying that they would have a fix for this imbecilism — & then undo the fix !!?!!

Much better than Albee’s overrated work. Tom Noonan is frighteningly charismatic. I’ve never cared for Wallace Shawn before but he’s quite good here. The last thing his character should be doing is seeing psychotherapists when what he should do is become a monk.
