I’ve seen Rosemary Harris, Lois Nettleton, Cate Blanchett and jessica Lange as Blanche onstage and they were all memorable. But with the radically exceptional Nettleton none of them was able to completely leave “theatrical spellbinder/sorceress:” Vivien Leigh behind. I remember the announcement on the initial release of this TV movie eliciting a personal feeling of dread at the notion of any of it being taken seriously. Boy, was I wrong! I was beyond shocked at how well it all worked. And I feel down the road it is even better than I remember.. As an aside, Williams himself was reported to have been very pleased particularly with Ann-Margret’s Blanche. And it is easy to see why.
