A young man lives with his attractive female cousin who is a student of the occult. She is at odds with her cousin’s sometime girlfriend who, if anything is an avid student of the same material. He hasn’t the money nor the connections to keep up with his girlfriend’s high style. The man finds a letter from a mysterious ‘Butterfly’ and decides to write back– with dramatic and sometimes terrifying results.

This gives them the opportunity to live together free from their previous lives. Unfortunately, this artificial arrangement leads to greater and greater stress. Eventually the situation collapses when they come to pursue their original, individual interests without choosing a common path.
Following college graduation, “Lefty” Phelps joins a U.S. Marine flight school, where he quickly becomes good friends with flight instructor Panama Williams. During training, their bond is strengthened when Williams courageously rescues Phelps after a crash. Filmed in a middle school gymnasium in suburban Japan, Goshogaoka takes as its ostensible subject the exercise routines and drills of a girls basketball team. The film consists of six ten-minute takes, shot with a fixed camera at court level, in which the various cadences of chanting voices and bodily movements digress into distinct studies. Taken together they construct a subtle and multi-layered social portrait, a portrait framed within a study of choreographed movements (the routines, etc.) and therefore one in which documentary values soon become inseparable from aesthetic ones.
