Thanks for posting this film, I never knew it existed. I lived in boarding houses in St Kilda where this was shot and worked as a taxi driver in Melbourne at the time this film was made so it was very familiar, I even knew one of the cast. A terrific little independent movie that caught the time and place of Melbourne in the late 80’s. A downbeat, gritty, intelligent little film eschewing the tendency of most Australian films of this time to make caricatures and cliches of its characters or to glamorise their surroundings.

I love this movie. I lived in a boarding house in South Lismore that was so similar. The use of the music combined with the sense of fragmented lives, isolation and loneliness against the backdrop of an older inner city area, made this movie an absolute classic. So much if the story takes place at night. Strong characters and some of the best one liners I have ever heard. “Talk about upsetting the apple art” And what could be more iconic than a neighbour in the shared yard working on his old banger while his transistor radio belts out the race form?

Thanks for the movie guys. We were just kids when this was filmed, the good old days in St.kilda.No mobile fones or internet ,yet we grew up happy playing around the best suburb of St.kilda. Kym gyngell lived across from my best mates flat years later. He was a quet sort of bloke and always said gday. The old footage brought back good memorys. cheers from bardi. (2025)
