An encounter between a man and his upstairs neighbor. In between shots of whiskey and lines of coke, a young man tries to learn some lines for his audition the next morning when he hears sounds of lovemaking from the floor above. A few knocks of the broom against the ceiling to calm things down and then the neighbor comes knocking at the door. They finally meet. Will it lead to neighborly conflict?

Strapped for time due to her busy schedule of personal appearances, Laurie Anderson creates a rather clumsy looking clone to take over and keep up her artistic production. Anderson plays both parts, pitting the chain-smoking, productive male half against the laid-back female half. In the end, one highly successful clone begets another clone, a situation spoofing the rise and fall of the ’80s art star.

Three sequences are linked together in this short film by Jean-Marie Straub; the first sequence is a long tracking shot from a car of prostitutes plying their trade on the night-time streets of Germany; the second is a staged play, cut down to 10 minutes by Straub and photographed in a single take; the final sequence covers the marriage of James and Lilith, and Lilith’s subsequent execution of her pimp, played by Rainer Werner Fassbinder.
