Clouds of Glory (1978)

Between 1798 and 1812, the wild, romantic country of the English Lake District saw an intense concentrated flowering of literary genius. At its centre was the poet William Wordsworth, born in the region, who lived there almost all his life with his beloved sister Dorothy. Around him, as the genius of the age, gathered other poets and writers – Robert Southey, Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Thomas de Quincey. This idiosyncratic two-part mini-series, conceived by acclaimed director Ken Russell, concentrates on the relationship between William and Dorothy, and the battle with laudanum faced by Coleridge.

I really enjoyed this! Ken Russell really has the sytlized shorthand for his subject down…right down to the Caspar David Friedrich references in the wide expansive landscapes. I really enjoyed it. David Hemmings certainly gave it his all- almost a proto-Oliver Reed in Russell’s canon.

In my opinion, Ken Russell’s best work is imbued with his unabashed love for his subjects and that unalloyed affection shines forth throughout both of these films.
What a deep pleasure it has been this Christmas being able to watch and re-watch CLOUDS. Thank you, Jon!

Hugely excited to find these two films! Saw them ONCE when they were first broadcast decades ago and the memory has stayed with me ever since. Shocking and an affront to sense that apparently stupid and selfish copyright issues have prevented proper release on dvd. So glad to have these – they truly are as fascinating as I remember.
