I giorni contati (1962) AKA His Days are Numbered

4.3

Never released in America, Petri’s second feature displays the same evocative mix of realism and symbolism found in THE LADY KILLER OF ROME. The film stars Salvo Randone as Cesare, a lonely Roman plumber in his early fifties. Traveling by tram one day, he witnesses the sudden death, by heart attack, of a man his own age. The event shocks him into the realization that his own days might be numbered, and he becomes determined to make the most of the time he has left. Quitting his job, he sets out with enthusiasm to enjoy the finer things in life, but the effort only leaves him dispirited and disillusioned.

22:22 “it’s nice at home doing nothing.”

Yes sir, damn right, it is!!!

There’s even a name for that: being a “gentleman of leisure”. An ideal occupation for my mothers son ….

I really like this a lot! GREAT and very thoughtful movie. 9/10.

I watched L’ASSASSINO, Elio Petris first, just yesterday and though ASSASSINO has stellar reviews on various sites I nearly fell asleep here and there. I do get it, that ASSASSINO is more about Italian society that the crime, but it was overlong and much too talky. The character played by Mastroianni is an egoistic slob, who I could not care about, and he is constantly babbling blablabla.

This here is the real deal. Says much more about society and work/labour back then than ASSASSINO, has a character I can relate to, and it shows how people lived back then and how cities and towns looked like. It also has a higher rating on the IMDb (7,6 versus 7 straight) and i agree to that.

If you wanna get into Petri, this is the better movie to start with.

    HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
