Harvest of Despair (1984)

HARVEST OF DESPAIR is the first documentary to be made about “the forgotten holocaust,” the 1932-33 famine in the Ukraine. Archival film footage and the riveting testimonies of survivors now living in the U.S. and Canada point to the appalling cause of the famine – a deliberate genocide plan decreed by the Soviet central government for political and economic gain. While their wheat-fields produced abundant grain for export, 25,000 Ukrainians starved to death daily, totalling 5 to 10 million by the end of 1933. Called “one of the greatest cover-ups in history,” the grisly horrors described are still denied by the government today. The film indicts not only the Soviet Union, but a world that permits such things to exist, even today.

Director: Slavko Nowytski.

Absolutely amazing. Thank you so much for this. I had never even heard of this documentary. It seems not only the bolsjevik and mensjevik mass murder on White Ukrainians was covered up, but also this film.

I remember back in 2010 when Abraham Foxman was head of the Anti Defamation League, he and a delegation of his went to Ukraine and met with Yushchenko’s advisors to warn them not to compare the two genocides the Holodomor and the holocaust:

“But one thing that you need to be sensitive about is not to link it with the holocaust. Be careful that it not be linked as your genocide and our genocide, because that would be counter-productive”, Foxman ordered the Ukrainian government.

All while Israel has not yet even recognized the Holodomor as genocide. Even though it was carried out by Jewish bolsjeviks, such as Genrik Yagoda (real Jewish name Yenokh Gershevich Iyeguda) who even had a “Hitler mustasch”, as we can see.

    Thank you, Rarefilmm!
