I found the idea of this remake in the face of Fred Zinnemann’s 1966 original to be cringeworthy, to say the least. I mean ANYONE overshadowing Paul Scofield? Are you kidding? Well, I was pleasantly proved wrong as this is quite good indeed. This is actually one of Charlton Heston’s better “serious performances”; no, he doesn’t outdo Scofield but he doesn’t try to. And the ‘responsible-to-the-source-material’ production as a whole holds tight. Definitely a watch recommend if the subject is appealing. Thanks, Jon, I missed this on it’s TNT televised first outing, and I’m glad I got to see it.

It was true to the play, not bad by any means
