Peterson Price Porterhouse III and Nancy Crane, both flat broke, meet on a Florida beach and decide to “go for the big money,” under the premise that perception will turn into reality. They crash into several big houses, pretending they are in the market for an estate, and are soon, although still penniless, living in the best hotel in town, throwing lavish parties and mingling with the upper crust. This is too good to last, but may have anyway if true love hadn’t reared its ugly head.

Based loosely on a real incident, the film tells of the disappearance of a little African-American girl in a small, segregated community. Caucasian Claude Packard (Harry Morgan, the nephew of the town’s richest man (Barry Kelley), is the last person seen with the little girl. Sensing a cover-up when Morgan is not immediately charged, the black community is on the verge of a riot. But when it’s discovered that the little girl has fallen down a well, all racial differences are forgotten as black and white neighbors work shoulder to shoulder to rescue the child.

It is set in New York and follows the exploits of an eccentric Parisian painter who has come to New York to escape a controversy surrounding his work. The trouble stems when the model he has used in all his work is found floating dead in the Seine.
