Three generations of a Scottish clan are chronicled in this melodramatic saga. The film starts with the death of a sickly med student in a Glasgow slum. His fiancee also dies in childbirth. Her brother, who survives, begins raising her baby girl who grows up to have an affair with a lab assistant. Her “father” disapprove and threatens to destroy the wedding.

Shimamura, an artist, comes to this snowbound town to rejuvenate himself. He connects with Komako, a geisha he met on a previous trip, and it seems like love. She’s the foster daughter of a local family, almost engaged to the family’s son Yukio, now dying of consumption. He’s tended by his sister Yuko who’s angry at Komako for abandoning her brother. Shimamura returns to Tokyo but promises he will be back soon. In anticipation of his return, Komako breaks with her patron and her family loses their home. Complications arise when Shimamura doesn’t come back as promised.

Lieutenant Johnson, a U. S. Air Force pilot, on the tip of Alaska, a few miles from the Bering Straits from Siberia, helps foil a Soviet plot to test a new secret weapon by loyal Alaskan Eskimos. He is aided by Sergeant Koovuk, an Alsaka native Eskimo also in the U.S. military service. Along the way there is an ice-floe evacuation, an air-ice rescue and a fight with a polar bear.
Impecunious samurai Iemon and his conniving servant Naosuke commit multiple murders to secure the affections of two sisters, Iwa and Sode. Iemon soon tires of Iwa, and given the opportunity to marry a wealthy man’s daughter, he removes the inconvenience of an existing wife by poisoning her and slashing to death the masseur he’d bribed to seduce her. The two bodies are nailed to opposite sides of a shutter and sunk in a pool. Both victims’ disfigured ghosts return to haunt the two murderers, leading them to further crimes and, ultimately, retribution.
An itinerant troupe of show-biz folks arrives in Cactus Creek. This band of traveling players consists of a hammy Shakespearean actor named Tracy Holland; Lily Martin,an ex-hoofer, and the young ingénue, Julie Martin. Edward Timmons is the show’s combination prop man, stage manager and extra, who has aspiration of becoming an actor. While the show is going on, local badman and leader of a bank-robbing gang, “Rimrock” Thomas steals everything that isn’t nailed down. This leads to several complications.
