Based on an actual incident, this is the story of five girls who are among the 200 women who answer a want ad for a modest secretarial position one rainy morning in Rome in 1951. They crowd and push their way into the old building and fight their way up the stairs to await an interview, only to be told there is not enough time to interview all. A scuffle breaks out and the stairway collapses sending many of them hurtling down in a mass of bodies amid brick and mortar.

Tsuma was adapted from a story by Fumiko Hayashi, who wrote about women’s cultural struggles in 1950s Japan and whose writings formed the basis for five other Naruse films.

A gang of thieves in Istanbul, led by a mastermind criminal known as “The Voice”, are planning to steal defense plans important to the protection of the Suez Canal during a peace conference to be held there. Larry Wilson, an American intelligence agent, is sent to the scene of the plot. The plans have been hidden in the jewel box belonging to a wealthy Egyptian attending the conference. As part of the plan, the gang hires Lynette Garay to assume the identity of a dancer known as the “Flame of Stamboul” and get friendly with the son of the Egyptian.

The coming of the railroad to Cedar City spells the end of the stagecoach as the government gives the mail contract to the fastest means of delivery. McCord loses the stagecoach line gambling with the new buyer, but has enough hidden money to buy a ranch and some cattle. To make more money, he starts a gang to rob the railroad, express offices and steal cattle. But the railroads send out special agent Cameron to end his reign of violence.
