Jacob Cotten is a rich banker, quickly approaching his 60th birthday. He is concerned that none of his sons are willing to or able to be in charge of the bank. One is a spoiled parasite unable to do an honest day’s work, the other has devoted his life to the communist youth club. Meanwhile, his beloved daughter Vica is unable to divorce her masochistic husband and gets herself a lover, a young idealistic medical student.

After pennyless miner Jess Collins saves Sonny Grover from two men he calls claim jumpers, he heads fo the town of Colton. There Grover’s brother grub stakes him and he waits for his claim to be recorded. But except for the brother he finds everyone against him including the two alleged claim jumpers who now say he is the partner of the claim jumper Sonny. Eventually he learns everyone except the brother knows Sonny was no good and he finds himself on the wrong side.

The editor of a sleazy tabloid newspaper has been borrowing money from his lover, the wife of a rich theatrical producer, and promises to marry her when she gets a divorce. However, the husband refuses to grant her a divorce, and takes back all the money and jewelry he has given her. The editor sees her husband leaving her apartment and, seeing his opportunity, kills her, takes all his IOUs (and the jewelry) and frames the husband for the murder.
