Erie Canal, N.Y., 1850: Molly Larkins, cook on Jotham Klore’s canal boat, has a love-hate relationship with her boss. She hires handsome new haul-horse driver Dan Harrow and the inevitable triangle develops (complicated by Dan’s desire to farm and Molly’s to boat) against a background of the canalmen’s fight against the encroaching railroad.

Harry Arno is a Miami Beach bookie who finds himself in trouble with his mob bosses for reasons he can’t quite figure out. When an assailant attempts to kill him, he decides that it’s time to retire, so he gives Raylan the slip and relocates to Greece. He gets lonely and so he invites his girlfriend Doris to join him. He’s afraid that his enemies might follow her to him, and he’s right. The story then shifts to Raylan, who does his earnest best to get to the bottom of the story.

A young, impoverished German woman named Hanna gives her infant up for adoption and emigrates to American to live with her husband. When her husband commits suicide, Hanna returns to Germany and works her way into becoming the live-in maid and nurse to her child being raised by an orchestra conductor and his wife.
In order to save a Jewish girl from the Nazis and their colaborators, Croatian family arranges her to be wed to their young son. Young man is displeased with sudden end to his careless youth and he doesn’t seem to like the girl or the whole idea. However, when she gets caught in a street raid, it is too late – he must face the fact that he loves her. A young man starts looking for her, even if it means that he would have to go to the very center of concentration camp – the Ninth Circle.
The main character is a bookkeeper, 40, who lives a quiet, uninteresting life with her husband and son of school age. She realizes that soon she won’t be needed much at home as the boy grows up and the relationship with her husband crumbles. It’s only when an embezzlement is discovered at the office and she stands up to her management, that she realizes life has more to offer.
