Flaming Creatures is a non-narrative, Dionysian orgy, complete with wild dancing, gender bending, and a climactic earthquake. The carnivalesque madness of the film is reinforced by the chaotic density of its formal composition. Jack Smith’s deliberate spatial disorientation creates a pansexual landscape of tangled body parts; just as the viewer is unable to situate the visual coordinates of the image, the creatures are unaware of which extremity belongs to whom.

WOW . . . what a find! “Historical benchmar” is the only way to designate this! I’ve been wanting to see this since I first read about it in A HISTORY OF AMERICAN AVANT- GARDE FILM over 50 years ago. This was a real ‘mish-mash’ of blurry and fast-moving images. It made no sense to me EXCEPT that there were a few quick views of female pubic hair, and more importantly, some shots of penises. It is very difficult for me to give any film or video a poor rating if they include views of penises.
