Royalty from a small European principality come to New York City to arrange for a loan to prop up their country’s troubled finances. While the queen mother attends to the negotiations, Princess Drina strikes up a friendship with Tex Donnelly, who owns a nightclub and gives her boogie-woogie piano lessons. When, Tex’s star singer, Claire, sprains her ankle, Drina steps in and belts out a few numbers impressing Earl Carroll, a Broadway producer who had come to see Claire perform.

The young Countess Wilma is forced to wed by midnight or lose her inheritance. Wilma impulsively chooses gypsy vagabond Latzi, offering him a huge sum of money if he’ll consent. Swallowing his pride, Latzi agrees to the marriage, but soon Wilma falls in love with the young Lieutenant Von Tokay who is himself in love with Latzi’s gypsy sweetheart Timka.
The story takes place in medieval France. Poet-rogue Francois Villon, sentenced to hang by King Louis XI for writing derogatory verses about him, is offered a temporary reprieve. His hanging will be postponed for 24 hours, and in that time he must defeat the invading Burgundians and win the love of the beautiful Katherine.

Oharu is the daughter of Kyôsai Shimura, a samurai who now makes his living making umbrellas. She is in love with another samurai, Reisaburô Asai, who lives next door, but he is being pursued by two of the town beauties, Otomi and Fujio. To make things even more difficult for Oharu, her father is obsessed with antiques, buying them even though he has little money and even when most of them eventually turn out to be fakes. A mistake, however, puts him deeply in debt to the local lord, Tanbanokami Minezawa, and he is confronted with having to sell Oharu in order to pay it off.
Erie Canal, N.Y., 1850: Molly Larkins, cook on Jotham Klore’s canal boat, has a love-hate relationship with her boss. She hires handsome new haul-horse driver Dan Harrow and the inevitable triangle develops (complicated by Dan’s desire to farm and Molly’s to boat) against a background of the canalmen’s fight against the encroaching railroad.
A singer marries a famous composer, and after a while she gets the itch to go back on the stage. However, her husband won’t let her. When she hears that a popular French singer named “Raquel” is coming to New York, she decides to go to Raquel with a plan–unbeknownst to her husband, “Raquel” is actually her sister, and her plan is for them to switch places so she can fulfill her dream of going back on the stage. However, things don’t go quite as planned.
