“The Chair” by Daniel Szczechura is a brilliant animated political satire depicting the timeless mechanism of the struggle for power. In a monumental hall, a meeting is underway – one seat at the presidential table remains empty. The candidates, shown from a bird’s-eye view as abstract, moving figures, compete ruthlessly, using tricks and underhanded tactics to win the titular chair. The film, made using cutout animation techniques, suggestively employs graphic simplicity, irony, and distance.

This is a little “restoration” by me with better audio than the only other HD copy floating around of this film, initially I was going to leave it as it was but I saw it was an Oscar winner so I thought it’d be worth spending some time trying to improve it so I started looking and found a lower quality copy from an old, SD master that had better audio so after a little time spent playing with fps and synching I managed to synch the unrestored but better sounding audio track it to this newly restored copy. There’s a “4K” copy on Youtube of this film also but it’s just a shitty AI upscale, this is the only proper restoration for this film, sourced from a Polish WEB source, until it gets a Bluray release this is the best copy we’ll see for this brilliant short film.

A young girl, Jadzia, is sentenced to death for the murder of her child. Shocked by her fate, lawyer Krystyna decides to defend her in the court of second instance. She learns the story of a girl who was seduced by a strange man during a trip. Jadzia is acquitted and tries to start her life anew, but fate is preparing another fatal surprise for her.

The role of Jadzia was the film debut of the seventeen-year-old actress Jadwiga Andrzejewska, who was immediately counted among the most outstanding Polish actors. The role of Krystyna was also the film debut of Irena Eichlerówna, a highly regarded theatre actress who, before the war, had starred in only two films.

A quality war film does not necessarily need spectacular aerial dogfights and bombed cityscapes. Only those movies have truly something to say that go beyond the crack of rifle fire to present personal dramas as well. Ferenc Kósa’s unusual, pacifist war film depicts the hell of carnage in all its senselessness. Characters of this gaunt, tight-lipped story wander through a beautiful landscape seeking their own truth or just the possibility of survival. The film is all the more memorable for the cinematography of Sándor Sára, the powerful screenplay and the acting of, for instance, Péter Haumann.
